VIJAYAWADA : Easter Sunday commemorating the resurrection of Jesus Christ was celebrated with religious fervour in the city. Faithful thronged various churches on the eve of Easter to attend special prayer service, marking the culmination of the Holy Week.

Midnight masses were held at churches to mark the occasion. A large number of people took part in the midnight special service at Gunadala Mary Matha Shrine which was well decorated and illuminated. Believers took out candlelight processions on Saturday midnight, celebrating the Resurrection. Special holy mass was held in various prominent churches early in the morning.

More than one mass was held in prominent churches, for the benefit of people speaking English and Telugu. The ceremonies were held with readings from the Holy Bible and popular Easter hymns and songs. Easter lilies adorned the altar in many churches. Tableaux enacting the resurrection of the Christ were staged and Easter eggs were distributed.

Hundreds of Christians took out a candlelight  procession. The festival is celebrated at the end of 40-day fasting and penance.

“The significance of Easter is it reflects hope that there is life beyond this world. The Resurrection marks perennial hope for the mankind,” said Vijayawada Diocese Bishop Rev Fr T Raja Rao.
